Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, fiends, and dark forces expanding in power within the urban setting.
Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.
The Warrior Group Unveiled
Episode 3 ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the initial group of heroes who will split off from the primary party to begin their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.
The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).
The Reason for Division
With 13 cast members, it was evident from the outset that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.
That’s why, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Explorers.
Characteristics of the Combat Party
As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where peaceful solutions are scarce.
Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might appear out of place, but the actions of the latest installment demonstrate why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the combat party.
Why They Must Go
For one thing, the team knows exactly where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with the antagonists.
Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise initiated the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.
Casimir then cleared his debts and fled to a secure base in the northern region, north of the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.
Individual Reasons
Additionally, each character has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:
- The agile hero, as the close ally and closest confidant, desires retribution.
- Kattigan knows the northern area and warns that it is a nasty place.
- The strong character and Wicander, having resisted his house’s orders to execute the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
- However, their position as key figures in the powerful family could help the team reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, The grateful character vowed a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.
Fugitives
Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that rule the city for a multiple motives, making remaining behind too risky:
- Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
- The strong figure and The healer turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
- The target is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.
This leaves them few options but to journey toward the northern region in search of Casimir.
