Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Officers then found numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report early analysis indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the case" and have asked to the public for information.
A senior representative said the attack made him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
